The Cats of The Los Angeles Flower Market

 


Hello, we are the cats of the L.A. Flower Market. We are not street cats or house cats; we are working cats employed by the flower vendors. We keep the rodents at bay and bring joy to the lucky customers who catch a glimpse of us. In our free time we snooze amongst the blooms, strut around the market, and sometimes interact with the humans. Sweet Slinky occasionally pays us a visit and while she finds the flowers to be lovely it is us she enjoys the most. You should come down and visit us sometime. The market is a fragrant piece of L.A. history and a great place for an early morning outing.

The Cat Joy Project was conceived in late 2024 when I found myself feeling overwhelmed by a sense of doom and gloom. I needed to refocus my attention. And so the idea of creating quilted cat squares as a way to share my love of cats, walking, and Los Angeles was born. After spending the latter part of 2024 and the first month of 2025 teaching myself to sew, the project is now ready to be launched. The hand sewn quilted squares will be released on my walking routes for someone to find. Each square represents a cat that I have encountered either on one of my walks or at some other point in my life. Every cat has a story. You can read their stories here. If you find a cat square, you may keep it or relocate it to be found again. I hope this small gesture will bring some joy and happiness to those who find the cats and those who follow their stories.

Sono un gatto molto amichevole. Vivo vicino al convento di Monteluco. Sono un micio fortunato perché molti pellegrini che percorrono la Via di San Francesco vengono a trovarmi. Sono sempre felice di farmi accarezzare e coccolare mentre si riposano nel bellissimo parco di casa mia. Spero di vederti presto. Buon Cammino! King of the 6th St. Viaduct Cat Colony

I am the king of the 6th St viaduct cat colony. This is my story: I held court at the Boyle Heights neighborhood cat colony in the shadow of the 6th St. viaduct. I have moved on from the streets, but my colony is still going strong. There are feeders that care for the felines and do their best to get them spayed and neutered. Despite being an outdoor cat, I was quite friendly. I encountered Sweet Slinky many a time and let her pet me and take my picture. If you find yourself in the neighborhood pay a visit to the cats who still reside there. They can be found roaming around near the corner of Clarence and Inez streets. I Gatti Sforzeschi

Sono un Gatto Sforzesco. Sono uno dei tanti gatti che hanno fatto del Castello Sforzesco la mia dimora. Si ritiene che i miei antenati risalgano all'epoca di Leonardo Da Vinci. La maggior parte di noi vive nei fossati che circondano le mura del castello. Solo i turisti più attenti avranno l'onore di intravederci. Essendo uno dei felini residenti più coraggiosi, spesso vagavo per il cortile intrattenendo i visitatori umani. È stato lì che ho conosciuto SweetSlinky un giorno di primavera tanti anni fa (2017). Lei è una di quelle attente che ci fa visita da quando era ragazza. È da un po che non ci viene più a trovare spesso come una volta. Si dice che si sia trasferita in una grande città lontana dove i gatti di strada, per qualche motivo sconosciuto, non vivono nei castelli.
