Powell Cat
Hello, I am Powell Cat. The UCLA campus was my home from 2015 until I took my final nap in March of 2023. During my stay I was a friend to any student who missed their pets and needed some furry companionship. I was loved and cared for, so much so that hundreds of people attended my memorial service and a lovely statue commemorating me was recently installed in Kerckhoff Hall. Sweet Slinky was lucky enough to spot me one day as I was sunbathing on the steps of Kaufman Hall. She mistakenly assumed that I was feral and did not try to approach me for fear of scaring me off. I was sad that she didn't get a chance to pet me. I loved pets and cuddles from all humans, even those not associated with UCLA. I'm delighted to see that I have inspired one of her coveted cat squares. I hope that it will bring joy to the human that finds it.

The Cat Joy Project was conceived in lat 2024 when I found myself feeling overwhelmed by a sense of doom and gloom. I needed to refocus my attention. And so the idea of creating quilted cat squares as a way to share my love of cats, walking, and Los Angeles was born. After spending the latter part of 2024 and the first month of 2025 teaching myself to sew the project was now ready to be launched. The hand sewn quilted squares are released around L.A. and beyond for someone to find. Each square represents a cat that I have met. Every cat has a story. If you find a cat square you may keep it or relocate it to be found again. I hope this small gesture will bring some joy and happiness to those who find the cats and those who follow their stories. If you found a square, pleas leave a comment to let me know. Thank you!
